Book Review : Title - The Emotionally Healthy Woman by Geri Scazzero with Peter Scazzero

The Emotionally Healthy Woman - Eight Things You Have To Quit To Change Your Life

“Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!”” John 21:22

This book is a dangerous book. It is not a book for women only. It is also for men. It is more than a book for women on improving their emotional health. It is also for men in some ways to understand women better. The book is dangerous because it has only 8 chapters and each begins with something to "Quit..."

1. Quit Being Afraid of What Others Think
2. Quit Lying
3. Quit Dying to the Wrong Things
4. Quit Denying Anger, Sadness, and Fear
5. Quit Blaming
6. Quit Overfunctioning
7. Quit Faulty Thinking
8. Quit Living Someone Else's Life

This was what Geri did. She quitted the church her husband pastored. But God used her courageous decision to change her life in profound ways. She found herself in the process of spiritual formation and was able to return and serve God and His people in greater joy, humility and delight.

All of us have seasons in life where we have to take a step or maybe two steps back, to sit back, reflect, repent, rest and return. This book helps to assess the inner turmoils of the inner life and to regain the balance needed for the seemingly stressful, busy and burnout-heading Christian life.

Though every chapter is good reading, I find chapters 5 to 8 are a must-read which I could identify with many situations being illustrated. Once again, read with caution and share with an accountable mentor your discoveries.

If Only They Knew

If Only They Knew

That God is with them
That God hears their prayers
That God knows their pain
That God sees their hearts
That God feels their sorrow
That God comprehends
That God rules over all
That God saves as many
That God waits for more
That God changes your heart
That God stills the storm within
That God walks with them
That God stands with them
That God hears their cries
That God listens to the silent
That God came as a man
That God died on that day
That God was buried there
That God rose on that day

Which Is Better?

Which Is Better?

To carry a cute baby or a big fat grown up in an adult diaper?

To move a small pot of plant now or a grounded giant tree later?

To start running when you are slim or when you are fat and chunky?

To go for a holiday when you can walk and see or when you can't walk and your eyesight is poor?

To start eating right now or when you are full of sickness?

To live life now or to regret living later?

To take a step of faith now or regret later not doing so?

To have tons of money and no peace or have peace even though have no lack?

To have a nice car with loads of debt or take MRT with time to read and sleep?

To say Yes to pleasure now and suffer later or to say No now and enjoy later?

To enjoy 5 minutes of pleasure and bear 50 years of pain or bear 5 years of waiting and enjoy 50 years of pleasure?

To experience a gentle cane of pain and learn or to be sentenced to years of jail after a rod cane on the bottom?

And many more ...

The Gospel for you and me

The Gospel for you and me

The Gospel for you and me
Good news to remind me
God, His magnificent presence
His love, His mercies, His gifts
His Son, His Spirit, His people
This world and cares, I lay at His feet

His precious Word I daily seek
I feast, I delight and I read
His instructions my daily need
I memorize, meditate and feed
Lest I forget by daily squeeze
By busyness, Satan's schemes

He lives, He lives, He lives
Though He died, was buried,
But on the third day, He rose
That's the Good News
That's His Promise, Our Hope
Through all of our daily strife
Through all our ups and downs
Through all our thick and thin

A Faithful Day

A Faithful Day

The breath of life
O I breathe again
The rising sun
My breakfast bun

My ironed clothes
Before the mirror
My hairs longer
Oops grown fatter

There my mother
Reminds me bring
Umbrella and water
Case thirsty raining

The trees dances
By the wind embraces
The birds flutter off
The sky to new places

The walk to the station
Pathway swept and neat
The gate's like a mansion
Welcome, take a seat

The train arrives timely
The tracks no squeaking
The doors slide smoothly
The air-con's a freezing

Without fail most heads
Gazing gadgets swiping
Traveling fingers instead
Touchscreens skating

The tunnels daily enter
In comfort no one wonder
How before they were dug
Above sea, life, below bug

I arrive, I work and work
One task after another
Through noon and look
O night, time to off computer

Dinner yummy is ready
Come round the table
O children o get daddy
Mum's meal o so noble

Night I lay down and breathe
A day passed and I still live
Has He been visible or not
In moments past He gave a lot

I close my eyes and dream
Of stories trees and streams
Of wonder why He save
Another faithful day gave

The Saviour and The Savour

There are many questions in life which many of them we will have no answers. But some of them we catch a glimpse of the answers through revealed sources like books and researches and personal experience. But today let us see if we can get some answers to these questions - Why Christmas? Why celebrate Christmas?

This is the Bible. Christians hold it and believe it as the word of God. I would like to share two verses from the Bible.

A Saviour is born and He is Christ the King ?

Who is this Saviour here referring to? Yes it refers to Jesus. What do a Saviour do? He saves. Saves from what, the next logical question to ask? God sent this Saviour Jesus to take the punishment of death for our sins (wrong doings, speech, thoughts and attitudes) and He was buried and on the third day, He was risen from death to life. This is what the Saviour do. What has this Saviour got to do with me? Notice the "i" in the word "Saviour". Let us take "i" out from the word, and what word do we have? It is the word "savour". It means "taste" and "enjoy" or "push to try out". This brings me to share the 2nd verse. The first verse is ....

The 2nd verse from the word of God is:
Taste (Savour) and see that the Lord is good. Psalm 34:8

The Lord refers to God; or the Saviour. The word "good" refers to God's blessings, past, present and future.

How can we know that the Lord is good? Taste and see. Savour and see for yourself. How can I know that the Sin Huat apples @Tiong Bahru are good and juicy? Taste and see. Have a bite. How can we know that the durians from this supplier is good? Smell, Taste and see and you will recommend it or not. How did you know that the turkey was good? Take a bite and see. Savour it with sauce and pepper.

This verse Taste and see that the Lord is good is an invitation. If I want to taste and see, how do I do it? I simply let the Lord know I accept the invitation through telling Him in words like this, "Dear God, thank you for Jesus. I want to taste and see that You are good. Let me experience Your goodness. I ask in Jesus' name. Amen." With that, we receive His invitation and God will show His goodness more clearly to you.

This is one of the reason we celebrate Christmas; to celebrate His coming and to save us so we may savour Him.

If any of you wants to taste God's goodness by saying the words just now, I am going to say it once more and you can repeat it in your heart.

"Dear God, thank you for Jesus. I want to taste and see that You are good. Let me experience Your goodness. I ask in Jesus' name. Amen."

Welcome to God's family.

How Could Christ Live Within My Soul

How could Christ live within my soul! Galatians 2:20

How could Christ live within my soul?
How could Christ live within my soul?!
How could Christ live within my soul?!!
And behold, He has made me whole!

Have you ever thought
How your soul He bought?
God becoming man
That's beyond me
I can't understand

Christ took all the pain
And bore it all alone
For only He qualifies
God's wrath to satisfy

Chorus
How could Christ live within my soul?
How could Christ live within my soul?!
How could Christ live within my soul?!!
And behold, He has made me whole!

Behold the boy in the cradle
Born for us in the stable
Not only will He make tables
He answers to all our riddles

The stone cannot hold Him
The soldiers couldn't bind Him
The seal hasn't authority on Him
How could the earth contain the Universe!?

Book Review : Title - Who Is This Man? by John Ortberg

“Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.” John 21:25

Pastor John Ortberg wrote on the numerous areas of impact Jesus had on human history, human condition and human relationships. What if Jesus didn’t leave his carpentry job and begin to teach? What if we take Jesus off our calendars, how will we account for our days and years? What if Jesus didn’t speak to the woman at the well, what would have become of the people of Samaria? What if there were no Jesus, how will our world be like? Hmm.

“Jesus inspired,” Ortberg wrote. “Jesus inspired a wealthy cheat named Zacchaeus to give away most of his fortune. He inspired a Samaritan woman to become an evangelist, and she inspired so many townspeople that they had Jesus – a Jewish rabbi – stay in their Samaritan town and teach them for two solid days. He inspired Peter to get out of his boat. … He inspired four friends of a paralytic to punch a hole through a roof to get their friend to Him. He inspired a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years to fight through a crowd just to touch the hem of his robe.” (pg 152)

Ortberg concluded one of the chapters on Jesus’ impact on the entire history of art – “Jesus had no place to lay his head yet became the primary shaper of architecture. We don’t know what Jesus looked like, yet he became the most recognizable figure in the world. He had “no form nor comeliness… no beauty that we should desire him,” yet he became the subject of more paintings and sculptures than anyone else. He never wrote a book, but he became the most written-about person ever and the greatest inspiration for global linguistic development. He is associated with only one unknown song but is the subject of more songs and music than any other human being. He died alone. Yet people die for him still.” (pg 163)

Ortberg ends the book with an invitation. Try Jesus. Come and see.
